The latest, greatest, and 8est

So, how come Apple's big OS8 Internet integration strategy leaves our favorite puppy outside in the rain, while inviting Netscape Navigator and Claris Emailer inside, and even right there on the desktop?

Heck, I don't know. Why do those Internet access icons on the desktop open up to either Netscape (Internet) or Claris Emailer (E-mail)? Maybe because people look at applications such as these as the way to do things. I happen to disagree, but for a lot of people, Netscape is the web browser, and Claris Emailer looks like a lot of other e-mail clients. What is familiar is comfortable. That's my thought as to why...

But, for those of us who want to get all that OS integration working Cyberdog's way, as well as to address any other OS8 concerns, point your browser to Jade's End Software: Cyberdog 2.0 and Mac OS 8 Tips. This is a great primer on getting the neat new stuff in OS8 working nicely with Cyberdog.

For another take on this process, check out this offering, from Paul Lindblad:

Chris Cotton's OpenFileService (a library you add to the 'Cyberdog Libraries Folder') is necessary to use the Mac OS 8 Info Center.

Only other measure to make the 'Mac OS 8 Info Center' to open as a web page in Cyberdog is simply adding one File Mapping to Internet Config (without Cyberdog running, saving the changed Internet Preferences...)

If you double-clicked on 'Mac OS Info Center' to see what it has to say about Mac OS 8; you might get what I did; simply a window titled: 'Mac OS Info Center OD' showing source code.

The Cyberdog Way to use the Mac OS Info Center after adding Chris Cotton's OpenFileService and the above File Mapping addition is selecting: 'Open File' from the Cyberdog menu bar and, voila; a web page opens to your local Mac OS Info Center.

You can trash all aliases to Mac OS Info Center that the Installer dropped on your hard drive.

You don't even need to add a File Mapping to InternetConfig for linking to another Mac OS 8 Installer feature:

Personal WebSharing: ...just adding Chris Cotton's OpenFileService will get us Cyberdoggers there.

Then add the two cyberitem links to your Cyberdog Notebook of choice!

The beauty of Cyberdog, ahh!
